Structure types
We cover the full range of Australian outdoor structures: pergolas (freestanding and attached), carports, shade sails, patio covers, verandahs, decks, outdoor kitchens and pool surrounds. For each type we describe how it works, what materials are typically used, and what questions to ask when planning one — we do not quote or sell.
Approvals and safety basics
Australian planning and building rules vary by state and council. We explain the general framework — what a CDC and a DA are, how BAL ratings work, what the BCA covers — and point readers to the official sources for their own area. We do not give advice specific to any property; for that, consult a registered builder or your local council.
Regional notes
Climate, land size, local character and council rules vary enormously across Australia. Our regional pages collect practical notes for each area — what works in Cairns is different from what works in Melbourne or Perth.
Days out
We include occasional notes about parks, gardens and public outdoor spaces worth visiting for ideas and inspiration. These are editorial picks, not sponsored listings.
How we choose images
All images are credited. We use images under licence or with permission; we do not use images found without a clear source. The image credits page names the source of every image on the site.
